| Roscoe E. Cartwright Jr. | Feb 20, 1970 | For heroism in
connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the
Republic of Vietnam. Captain Cartwright distinguished
himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 20 February 1970 while
commanding Troop F, 17th Cavalry. On that date, the troop was conducting
a search and clear operation in the vicinity of Vinh Huy when it was
assaulted by an unknown size North Vietnamese Army force". During the
ensuing battle, a tank was hit by an enemy Rocket Propelled Grenade
round, severely wounding the crew. Reacting immediately to the urgency
of the situation, Captain Cartwright directed his command track to the
crippled vehicle's position. With complete disregard for his personal
safety, he dismounted and began removing the wounded crewmen from the
heavily damaged tank. When an intense volume of hostile sniper fire
wounded two more men, Captain Cartwright unhesitatingly exposed himself
to the enemy fusillade in order to carry his comrades to safety.
Returning to the wrecked tank, he suffered severe wounds as the burning
. vehicle exploded. Ignoring his painful wounds, Captain Cartwright
skillfully reorganized his unit and led it in an assault on the hostile
emplacements. Denying himself medical attention, Captain Cartwright
skillfully directed his unit's maneuvers until he succeeded in
overrunning the enemy positions. Through his timely "and courageous
actions, he was instrumental in thwarting the hostile assault and served
as an inspiration to his men. Captain Cartwright's personal heroism,
professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the
highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit
upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army. |
